LEVEL 2
LEISURE TEAM MEMBER (v1.1)
The Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship Assessment Explained
Leisure Team Members play a central role in delivering high-quality customer experiences across a wide range of leisure and fitness facilities – supporting healthier communities through inclusive and engaging physical activity.
This Level 2 apprenticeship is designed for individuals working within the day-to-day operations of leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms, and fitness venues. Typically employed as recreation assistants, leisure professionals, or attendants, these team members are the face of the facility – providing a welcoming, professional presence and ensuring activities run safely, smoothly and to a high standard.
Working as part of a multi-skilled team, apprentices are expected to cover a wide range of operational duties, including:
-
Opening and closing the facility.
-
Delivering gym inductions and supporting fitness programmes.
-
Teaching swimming lessons.
-
Leading group activity sessions.
-
Maintaining cleanliness and health and safety standards.
-
Setting up and packing down sports halls for activities like badminton.
-
Carrying out equipment checks and routine maintenance.
-
Supporting and signposting customers to suitable services.
Throughout the day, they may take on multiple roles – acting as a lifeguard, swimming teacher, group activity leader and gym instructor – depending on the programme of activities and the needs of customers.
Team members are often the first point of contact, which means delivering excellent customer service is fundamental to the role. They must be confident communicators, capable of answering queries, handling straightforward complaints, and promoting activities using the facility’s IT systems. Product knowledge, professionalism and empathy are essential, especially when supporting a wide range of customers – from children learning to swim, to older adults attending social fitness groups, or gym users training for a sporting event.
A sound understanding of health and safety, safeguarding, equality, and inclusion is expected – ensuring a safe, accessible environment for all. The role requires flexibility, with shifts typically operating across a seven-day week and including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
All Leisure Team Members are trained to work across five core areas:
-
Leisure and fitness operations
-
Lifeguard duties
-
Swimming teaching
-
Gym instruction
-
Leading group activity sessions
Timeline
The apprenticeship typically takes 18 months to complete, with assessment typically undertaken in the final 3 months.

Assessment methods
01
Professional Discussion supported by a Portfolio of evidence
A structured, 60-minute professional discussion takes place between the apprentice and a qualified assessor. This assessment is designed to explore the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) assigned to this method, with the apprentice using their portfolio to illustrate and evidence their responses.
Portfolio requirements:
-
Submitted by the apprentice at Gateway.
-
Used during the discussion to support responses and demonstrate competence.
-
A qualitative rather than purely quantitative approach is encouraged
02
Observation with questions
This method involves the independent assessor observing the apprentice as they carry out their normal duties within their usual workplace setting. The observation allows the assessor to see the apprentice’s practical competence in real time and ask follow-up questions to clarify or explore aspects further.
