LEVEL 5
LEARNING AND SKILLS TEACHER (v1.4)

The Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship Assessment Explained

This occupation is found across the Further Education and Skills (FES) sector, typically in settings where students are aged 16 and above. In some cases, teachers may also work with 14–16-year-olds in alternative provision or in FE colleges with Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) approval.

Learning and Skills Teachers are employed in a range of contexts – including further education colleges, sixth form colleges (general or specialist), independent training providers (ITPs), adult community learning (ACL) organisations, and offender learning environments.

Teaching is delivered across multiple levels – usually up to Level 3 – and may include academic, vocational and technical education. Some teachers may also deliver at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The occupation covers a wide variety of subject areas. Many Learning and Skills Teachers are dual professionals, bringing both technical and academic expertise to their role to deliver a high-quality learning experience.

The core purpose of the role is to ensure that learners in Further Education and Skills Sector (FES) settings acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to succeed. Learning and Skills Teachers achieve this by planning and delivering teaching that is current, comprehensive and challenging – designed to inspire learners, promote progression and support everyone to reach their potential.

Day-to-day, they interact with fellow teachers, support professionals, employers, stakeholders and a diverse student body – with varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Those teaching technical or vocational subjects typically maintain close links with their industry to ensure their knowledge remains up to date and relevant.

Learning and Skills Teachers are responsible for preparing students for employment, further study, or career progression. To meet the needs of a varied and often complex student population, they must be flexible, innovative and able to adapt their teaching approach. A strong understanding of pedagogy and evidence-based practice is essential – alongside the ability to reflect on what works in different subject areas and teaching contexts.

This is a role with significant professional autonomy. Teachers are expected to demonstrate high standards of personal conduct, engage in continuous professional development, and may also have responsibility for managing others or overseeing budgets.

Timeline

The apprenticeship typically takes 18 months to complete, with assessment typically taking place in the final 3 months.

Assessment methods

01

Observation with Professional Dialogue

An independent assessor observes the apprentice carrying out their normal duties in the workplace. The assessor may ask questions during or after the observation to confirm understanding and explore aspects of practice.

  • Conducted under normal working conditions.

  • Simulation is not permitted.

  • Mapped to the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs).

02

Professional Discussion underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence

A structured, formal conversation between the apprentice and an independent assessor. The apprentice may use their portfolio to illustrate and support their responses.

Portfolio requirements:

  • Compiled during the on-programme phase

  • Evidence must be clearly aligned with the KSBs assessed in the Professional Discussion

  • The Portfolio is not assessed
