Helping learners feel confident in their Assessment Observation
Following on from our recent thoughts on remote delivery of observations, we’re continuing the conversation around how to make the Assessment observation experience as smooth and supportive as possible.
At Elevate, we understand that many apprentices feel anxious about making mistakes during their Assessment observation. These concerns are completely normal, but it's important to know that the focus is on demonstrating competence in real-life situations, not on being perfect.
Our assessors often say:
“It’s not about getting everything perfect, it’s about demonstrating your skills in real-world situations. Mistakes are part of the journey, and how you handle them is what truly matters.”
We support apprentices and training providers and employers by promoting a positive, confident approach to assessment. Some key strategies we encourage include:
Shift the focus to competence, not perfection
Apprentices should be encouraged to understand that assessments reflect workplace realities, things won’t always go exactly to plan, and that’s okay.
Break down the criteria
When training providers help apprentices clearly understand the assessment criteria, it becomes less overwhelming. We encourage providers to guide apprentices through the expectations in manageable steps.
Encourage practice
We recommend that training providers use mock observations where possible. These practice runs allow apprentices to build familiarity with the process which helps reduce nerves.
Reframe mistakes as opportunities
Mistakes offer a chance to demonstrate resilience and problem-solving. Calm reflection and recovery are key traits that assessors value.
Share success stories
Hearing from others who made mistakes but still succeeded helps normalise the experience. Mentorship and peer support can boost confidence and offer valuable insights.
By focusing on growth, resilience, and realistic expectations, training providers and employers can help apprentices approach their Assessment observations with calmness and confidence, ready to show what they can do.
